whew. probably the most i've ever written in a year. probably definitely because of S11 au.

once again, writing sprints were hugely, hugely helpful for me this year. so was physical note-taking, especially for the two longer fics i wrote this year. i am definitely going to keep doing that in the future.

i posted more individual works this year than i ever have, clocking in at 12. the next closest year was 2012 with 7 works, and some of those were cross-posts, iirc. anyways, down to the nitty-gritty – list of works under the cut.

i've got two year-end posts to make so i'm gonna stagger them - lolita fashion infodump first! because i am still writing tonight, against all odds.

2020 was my first full year wearing lolita fashion (ehh - i got my first piece in january of 2019, so it's really been two years, but still) aaaand... i don't really know what to say! this year was so. you know. at best, chaotic. but lolita fashion was a constant for me in its own funky way.

SO many links below the cut lmao )

christ alive. i started writing this fic... apparently at the start of october, and i've just finished writing it — which is to say, it's ready for editing, and probably heavy editing. but hey! 20k fucking words in about two months. damn.

but boy was it a struggle. )

here we are again! i finished bleach. like, the whole thing this time. my feelings have not changed much.

would i "recommend" it? i mean... if you have the nostalgia for it already in place, then yeah, revisiting the series up through the end of the winter war (aizen, etc.) arc is totally worth it. if you've never read bleach... maybe don't, unless you're willing to do 686 chapters with, like, no payoff. (except the winter war arc. everything up through there is great.)

image-heavy and VERY spoiler-heavy under the cut! )

mmm, nostalgia. very tasty. tl;dr for this post: i thought about bleach, then i read a fic* on a whim, then i thought about it way too hard, then i read up on canon, re-read some chapters i remembered liking, skimmed the ending, and now i'm big mad about it.

in sum: bleach deserved so much better than it got. good lord.

spoilers below, obviously )

temeraire is a series of nine novels, written by naomi novik, spanning the alternate-history length of the napoleonic wars in a world where dragons exist.

nine books in one week! that's close to a record for me, i think. which is to say: these books were incredibly enjoyable as a whole, and clearly really lovingly researched. an extremely fun alternate-history adventurous romp.

A soft press of presence at the gates to the Shattered Keep draws his attention, and he almost ignores it – almost – but a strange flickering snap of threads out of place reveals the presence of much, much more magic than any Faithful or denizen of his should possess.

Cyric curls a wraithlike avatar out of the shadows that coat the Keep and dresses it in a face his visitor will recognize: pale but not pallid, handsomely sharp but not gaunt, attractively flecked with scars that precious few others would remember. A serviceable facsimile. She doesn't notice him slink up through her flickering shadow.

“To what,” Cyric purrs from over her shoulder, “do I owe the pleasure, my dear Lady?”

nope, not that avatar. this is AD&D2 lore. this is 80s fantasy novels. this is late-80s franchise tie-in fantasy novels.

the verdict? waterdeep was kinda meh, had some great character moments. prince of lies was such an unbelievable delight, i don't even know where to start.

Myrkul is your god of death, and you have always valued the domain over the divinity. It's an arrangement that works.

Safvara makes herself intimately familiar with death, and the dispatching of it. Corpses dust her wake, left for you to coax them back as you see fit. Things are simple.

i finished playing through halo wars for the first time yesterday!

non-spoilery thoughts: i loved it. this game was fantastic. i loved the story it told, and i am SO excited to play halo wars 2. i'm very terrible at RTSes - i don't play them and i'm not good at strategy-type games of any kind, but i played with a friend who's played before and i had a really great time. it was pretty relaxing to build up bases and listen to SUPPLY PAD UPGRADED. SUPPLY PAD UPGRADED. SUPPLY PAD UPGRADED. backed by one of THE BEST soundtracks ever applied to a halo game. seriously, the soundtrack was probably the best part; it's so different from other halo games, but manages to evoke a lot of the same vibes. fave bits include:

so good. so fucking good. so much more synth-y than the other bungie-era entries in the series, and the soft piano notes are so choice.

and quality!

i've posted 7 works on AO3 in the past six months, which is more than i've ever done in such a short amount of time.

...actually, now that i've checked, 2012 had a similar amount of works between may and october — but that includes reuploads/reposts to AO3 of 2 older fics, and 3 works that were part of one series (which i think about as one work, tbh). the one work i orphaned was also, i think, posted in 2012. wow. damn. i wrote a lot of words throughout 2012.

yep! yep. i'm callin' it done. gdocs is clocking in at 103,773 words (which is inaccurate for a few reasons, but close enough). i'm waiting until tomorrow to post it, just in case i suddenly think of something to change.

every time i thought to myself this week "hmm, i might be done and ready for final edits," i think of something else to change or add. mostly that's been a good thing, but i'm probably edging into nervous nitpicking at this point.

endings are hard. who knew! )

i'm in the thick of editing S11 au right now, and it's occurred to me that i've never edited on quite such a large scale before - S11 au is currently clocking in at about 97k words, and while it's technically complete, i have one major gap to fill (gap as in "i did not write the transition from A to B, and i have to write it now), and then a lot of little things to tie up and conversations for characters to have. i keep finding things that i need to embellish or add, and it's actually an incredibly enjoyable process!

my current knot of loose ends to untangle has to deal with reconciling canon events, though, and the question is: do i describe events as they transpired in canon, or do i let the reader do it themself?

spoiler alert: this question has no one true answer )

my brain wants to pick at things, so i'm trying to trick myself into feeling like i'm editing S11 au by editing S11 au. just not the most recent part.

will probably update this post as i go )

aaand edits are done somehow )

i'm... done??? i'm done with part iii of S11 au. wow. i'm done with the thing.

this is in need of severe edits and is metaphorically being held together with spit and prayers, but it's DONE. turns out all i needed was a solid shove and to stop being scared of finishing this.

wow. boy. time to put this away for a bit and then start patching up the extensive holes in this thing. current count is 95,312 words, and i have plenty of things that need expanding on.

edit now that i've had a snack and some time to think )

finally jarred something loose in me today with dndfic. sprinted with kei afterwards, wrote 423 words where i'd been able to do zero for months, and decided to finally start pulling endgame bits from my doc full of fragments.

took me the fuck long enough! )

A bright spark of blue bleeds into the shaft of the last arrow, jumping eagerly from his fingers to sink into slim, straight wood, sinking into the soft, rich earth to bury itself into the arrowhead. Energy hums warmly along his arm for just a second longer, and the sensation fades along with the last whispered words of the spell.

Erlkazar keeps a tight hold on their borders. Even camped just on the other side it’s unlikely they’ll come to harm, but habits are hard to break. The forest and mountains around him are full of life, trees sheltering so many bright sparks.

“You’re distracted,” Jolyon says, apropos of absolutely nothing.

Uldren jumps like he’s touched an Arc charge and goes back to his binoculars so fast, he might end up with a bruise on his nose for it.

“I wasn’t,” he says, much more coolly than he feels.

Jolyon snorts quietly.
