pretty writing-light year for me, not entirely sure why; so it goes, though, i guess. i wrote a lot in both 2020 and 2021 so i suppose it's natural to have a bit of a fallow year. and what a way to end the year too — S11 au sequel cooking in the oven. i may never actually be free of that goddamn show.

this total word count is off on account of the posted works; i have no clue how to count the rewritten chapter for S11 au. in terms of net word count, S11 au as a whole gained 4,005 words - but almost the entirety of this chapter was rewritten from the ground up. my total word count for the chapter was 43,740, according to AO3, so i whacked 2k off of that as a very generous estimate of the words or phrases here and there that i left intact.

in any case: 7 individual works posted/updated in 2021 across 4 fandoms! deets under the cut.

and the usual end-of-year meme! as with every year i've done this, i'm defining "successful" as "achieving what i wanted to achieve" rather than any kind of numbers metric.

whew. probably the most i've ever written in a year. probably definitely because of S11 au.

once again, writing sprints were hugely, hugely helpful for me this year. so was physical note-taking, especially for the two longer fics i wrote this year. i am definitely going to keep doing that in the future.

i posted more individual works this year than i ever have, clocking in at 12. the next closest year was 2012 with 7 works, and some of those were cross-posts, iirc. anyways, down to the nitty-gritty – list of works under the cut.

while i'm at it with year-end things, time for numbers!

word count for posted works: 38,162

as far as unposted writings, i'm not 100% sure on my word count – from a cursory look through my docs full of fragments, i've got 20,062 words, 14,131 of which is in my working doc for S11 au. so all together, about 58k words written this year! which feels like both A Lot and Not.

i feel like this was a good year for writing – or, at the very least, that i've learned a lot. i published 4 works this year:

and i also updated syzygy with a final "miscellaneous tidbits" kind of chapter, but i think i'd still count that as a 2017 fic since i did write most of that chapter in 2017... i think.

each of these fics has really stood out to me this year for their own reasons, and i feel good about all of them. the way i planned sbsbs has really been working for me, and i'm looking forward to implementing it for S11 au. equinox was my first femslash february, and i want to write more. apsidial precession was the first thing i've ever written and posted in one day, and the I Must Write compulsion was a hell of an experience. forfeit was a continuation of writing weird, obtuse, flowery things that felt great.

my fic goals for next year are:

  • primarily, get back to work on S11 au
  • which means finishing sbsbs – but i'm at about the 3/4 mark, i think, so it shouldn't take too long
  • write more short fic and oneshots. equinox, precession, and forfeit all felt great to write, and i want to remind myself that it's fine to just write something smaller.

so we'll see! i'm also in a weird spot where i'm still adjusting to how much free time i (don't) have thanks to work; it's not bad, and i genuinely adore my job, it's just weird to have so much less free time than i'm used to. but like hell that's gonna stop me from writing, so, you know. here's to 2019!
