here's a fact about me that, if you didn't already know it, i think really draws a complete picture of me: i joined tumblr in early 2010 and stayed very firmly on the Hipster Side for quite a while. my stray to the Fandom Side was honestly very gradual; i still follow aesthetic photography blogs, and i lost touch with the last of the old guard of fandom friends that overlapped with hipster friends only in the great purge of 2018.

here's another fact: i just listened to brand new for the very first time today.

pretty tired as of writing this but DW is a nice journaling space so bear with me here. i've been thinking a lot recently on how i use social media - why am i using this [insert service], what do i want out of [insert service], etc. - and on how that's changed from the past.

the tl;dr is that social media sucks and we live in an absolute hellscape but my dearest friends live very, very far away from me, and i'm glad for this way of connecting with them. 🤷‍♂️ the Tired is growing so i'm just going to list out a bunch of stuff i've been consciously choosing to do recently that's been a good change for me.

i'm now [archiveofourown.org profile] glassedplanets on AO3 and [twitter.com profile] glassedplanets on (fandom) twitter! main/RTs/uspol/whatever-it-is-now twitter is now [twitter.com profile] prophecydungeon due to the swap.

this has been a reeeeaaaaally long time coming lol, beastofthesky was a username i didn't use anywhere else save for an old email i made in hs, which is why i originally chose it - i didn't want it linked back to my tumblr blog at the time, which ended up being in my favor. that's a whole different can of worms. anyways, "beastofthesky" has felt embarrassing and bad to me for a really, really long time, idk what snapped in me tonight and finally got me to rearrange everything. i feel a lot better now that all my creative accounts (AO3/twitter/artblog) are all under the same name! and "glassedplanets" has name recognition to it, and it's a fantastic halo joke. a win all around.

i subscribe to the rec center, which is a weekly email that gathers up articles on recent fandom goings-on, older things that might have been missed or are just cool, some fanart, and (of course) a handful of recs from a huge spread of fandoms; occasionally the rec lists are themed, and/or they do a fandom or ship explainer with recs to go with it (i did an overwatch explainer for them... wow, that was over 2 years ago now).

anyways, they put out a call for rarepair recs and of course, now i'm thinking about what exactly constitutes a rarepair.

personally i'm a medium/medium well person, but, eh. )

(i need to stop trying to make witty titles.)

anyways, i started doing writing sprints with a friend and why did i never do this before. this has been such a sledgehammer for every block i've run into in the past week or so (which, wildly enough, has been a lot of blocks). this is so much fun. seriously, why in all hells did i not do this before.

and for a short fragment from tonight's sprint that i liked: )

edited my sticky post to be an about, which really made me miss tumblr's capability to have an about section as part of the sidebar. i would love to have name/pronouns/blurb on my sidebar here. alas!

as i freeze to death in this icebox of a backroom at work and try to get some writing done, i keep getting tempted to write a ship manifesto/"why i love it" type of post for... literally anything, tbh. everything! but i know i'm preaching to the choir and that i don't have anything novel to offer, so i've never sat down to do it. closest i've come was my "why i will eternally be pissed about the rvb S9 trailer being retconned" post, but that was pure salt rather than love. :B (or the overwatch explainer i did for rec center a while back, i guess.) i dunno, maybe i'll think of a fun way to do some ship (or series) manifestos, or find a meme, or something. @ self, find a good excuse to blabber about why you love a thing.

edit: THANK YOU [personal profile] anneapocalypse!!

still feels so fucking weird to put titles on things. formalizing my thoughts? don't know her

anyways, as i was driving home today i thought about the very first few fics i wrote and posted back when i really first got into fandom; this was early 2011 rvb, pre-S9 rvb, which is to say, a whole different beast (and for me, pre-AO3. this was an archive hosted on its own site. a relic even in those times, i think). that's not especially relevant save for the date, though, and the fact that it was my first time writing fic intended for the consumption of others, and unleashing it on the world. 2011 was really my first true foray into fanfiction, since in the weeb days i only stuck to deviantart, and where i'm going with this is that i didn't know how to format fic. the first thing (or few things? idr) i published was formatted like a published book would be — chunks of paragraphs, indented dialogue, etc. also, reasonably sure it was a pwp. that'll be relevant later in this meandering post.
